To comply with the National Cancer Institute’s description of a comprehensive cancer center, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center is designed, organized, and administered to be more than a sum of its parts by supporting the interaction of each program towards a common goal of accelerating discovery and improving treatment for cancer patients. United under one roof, the medical staff, educators, and researchers at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center are committed to providing compassionate patient care, advanced research, and innovative medical education. Completed in two phases, the building is designed to encourage interaction between faculty, researchers, and patients and to be a integrated part of the medical campus. The building envelope is comprised of the same materials – brick, precast, and curtain wall – as those of the existing medical campus buildings in a contemporary design that maximizes daylighting and views. For example, the curved curtain wall of the 3-story atrium in the cancer center takes its cue from the curved exterior walls of the hospital lobby and ambulatory care buildings.
