Industrial building Lamiflex Composites

BURATTI ARCHITETTI as Architects

The project is the conversion o fan existing industrial plant: a ‘50s weaving factory along the river Serio at Ponte Nossa, in Val Seriana, in the province of Bergamo. The construction now houses the avant-garde production of fibres and carbon composites.

Two parts of the natural landscape meet in the design: the jagged line of the nearby mountains, which, moving the eye upward, grow up an expanse of woods into pointed peaks, and the horizontal surface of the river. A sharp white line, interrupted in two places by a CorTen steel box inserted into the outer wall is built between these two elements. The burnished brown steel appears almost by surprise, contrasting with the white blanket of reinforced concrete panels held in a gray frame. The boxes are actually emergency exits.

After the difficult task of convincing the reluctant municipal officers, who where in favour of a heavier construction with a style that was slightly more reassuring to local taste, the building was completed. In the coming years another facility will be erected next to it, but using entirely different materials.

While the factory is a solid box, lightened by its colour, which in winter blends in with the snowy surroundings, the office building instead will be “ a kind of lantern made all in glass” that will became a glimmering reflection in the waters of the river.
