Extension and rehabilitation of a traditional hill house
This rehabilitation consists of an upper extension of the original house without a rise of the height of the façade, due to an official protection of the street profile. Therefore, we used the original rising section of the house, which was built on the foot of a hill.
In order to use the back yard of the plot, the areas of the house were reversed. As a result, the living room was moved to the top floor –the new level extension- in direct communication with the outside, and the bedrooms were built on the first floor. The original ground floor, practically carved into the hill, has been used as garage, storage and entrance to the house.
The one flight staircase connects the three levels, announcing the presence of the garden at the top from the entrance to the house. On the wall of the living room a triangular skylight helps illuminate this room, allowing the view of the nearby mountains. The shape of the skylight results from the convergence of the old and new roofs. The section uses resources that could recall to Loos' Raumplan, but are typical of the vernacular architecture of the region. Traditions and the contemporary can still cross, if we allow it.
