The apartment is on the third floor of a residential building built 70 years ago on a generous hillside of the mouth of the Tagus River which so strongly marks Lisbon. The work also aimed to expand the existing area by harnessing the attic accessed through a new ladder.
The choice of the ladder site was the primary action. It dictated everything else. Picked up on a central position, facing the entrance, between the classical legacy and single-ceilinged space that characterizes the living room and the new space double-ceilinged dining room. You can feel the spatial duality when you notice that the present is "glued" to the attic space and it´s invading the lower floor. The stairs object helps this feeling and the transition of the colour treatment of the two spaces and it’s detailing also represents the different times of the house. The very form of the staircase, suspended over the room, announces the conquest of the new space.
