Hilton Bandung Hotel

Hilton Bandung Hotel

WOW Architects as Architects

The Hilton, Bandung is a five-star, 186-room hotel built to reflect an urban resort, with world-class conferencing and event function facilities catering to both business and leisure travelers. There are seven dedicated meeting rooms, lounges, a 1000 square-metre grand ballroom, spa, gym/pool facilities and restaurants. This property marks the entry of Hilton's flagship brand into Indonesia, and the second Hilton Family branded property in the archipelago.

Bandung's topography, with its surrounding volcanic mountain range, inspired the Firm to design the architecture, landscape and interiors of The Hilton, Bandung into a multi-sensory integrated experience that embodies the spirit of Bandung. The ground plane is sculpted into a landform of 'cliffs', 'valleys' and a central atrium riverbed upon which various hotel functions sit. Folded into a massive stone canyon wall in the lobby, its carved texture is inspired by a geometric Javanese batik pattern. A double-triple height lobby 'valley' basked in natural light evokes streams and flora. As the landscaped ground plane extends upwards to culminate in the roof 'plateau', the cinematic quality of unfolding spaces permeates the entire building. Meanwhile, within this urban resort and business hotel rich with local character, guests can visually engage the mountainscape which further heightens the sense of place. The resulting integration of the local urban and geographical characters shapes a seamless experience throughout the hotel that dissolves the boundaries between the inside and outside of the hotel and encourages interactions between hotel guests and locals within its public spaces.

This building challenges the way hotels are designed and experienced in the Asian urban context. It stands out, but does not compete with the predominantly Art Deco-styled buildings influenced by Bandung’s Dutch colonial past. Instead, it complements and reinforces the tradition of glamorous travel with which Bandung is associated.
