BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group as Architects

RETAIL ARCHIPELAGO “To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote: To travel is to live.” wrote Hans Christian Andersen in 1833, in The Fairy Tale of My Life. Now at the Copenhagen airport The BIG Mermaid escorts all passengers as they travel the world. We also continued a tradition of contemporary Danish artists such as Elmgreen and Dragset or Bjørn Nørgård to continue to revisit the national heritage and identity nested in Andersens mermaid by treating her as a dynamic entity alive and available for reinterpretation rather than an untouchable dead monument. Andersen injected the everyday with poetry and The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen is more than anything remarkable for how unremarkably she sits at the waters edge small and without a pedestal as if she is just a natural part of our daily life. Denmark is made up of almost 1000 islands from the North Sea to the Øresund. The BIG Mermaid at CPH is conceived as an archipelago of Scandinavian products amidst the flow of people moving through Copenhagen Airport.
