Hazelton Residence transforms two separate two story residential duplex units stacked vertically on top of one another into one cohesive luxury single family residence. The combined project consists of a 3,200sf full interior renovation and a 800sf addition to the rowhouse originally designed by acclaimed architect Barton Myers. The project is located in Yorkville, a historical district of downtown Toronto.
The project is re-organized both programmatically and spatially through the utilization of three two story voids that stitch the separated layers of program together. These double height spaces activate the section and become the visual and social nuclei of the house. Each void functions to bring light into the very narrow and deep floor plates. Materiality emphasizes this function with a gradient patterned reflective film that picks up on the constantly changing light levels through out the day.
The new 1,200 sf third floor master bedroom suite sits below the 2 story lightwell and skylight and sits above a frosted glass floor overtop of the kitchen. From below only silouettes are seen.
