Broekbakema as Architects

Quick design for rapid innovation

In exactly twelve months ‘Fast Track Offices and Labs’ (FTOL) was completed, entirely from design to completion. In unprecedented rate, resulting in a high qualified, safe and friendly building for Synthon Biopharmaceuticals in Nijmegen (Netherlands).

In this project Broekbakema was involved from masterplan up to interior design. FTOL is clearly structured in five layers. The warehouse is situated underneath the green deck, on top of the green decka glass office floor top is located. Above the deckfloats a three layered volume consisting of laboratories, offices and technical rooms. Due to two voids the spatial entrance is openly connected to the first floor. The storyhigh curtain façade increases the interaction with the surrounding landscape. The overhanging building volume ensures solar heat to stay outside in a natural way. The façade consists of two layers. A wind- and waterproof assemblage facade in a bright lime yellow color anda second skin of expanded metal. Seen from the highway the building seems to be pretty closed, but when approaching the building the façade opens and the lime colored inner skin becomes more and more visible.

Since 2008 Broekbakema is designing the master planfor theSynthon Campus. FTOL is the first completed building. Meanwhile, designsfrom landscape to interiorand constructions for additional buildings have started.
