Fratelli Social Club

Twins Studio as Architects

Fratelli Social Club is a well-known place to Bucharest residents. In 2015 a change of ambiance was needed. By generating the new design, MihaiPopescu wanted to transform an 8-year old space into a new dimension, without changing its structure. The place consists of a web of lines that compose an approximate sphere whose geometry has been modified, generating an “altered” geodesic dome.

Once you are inside the Pescariu complex, before reaching the shore of Floreasca lake, you can see an atypical totem, a sort of whirlpool that drags you more and more to another world. It is the first sign leading you to the “nest”. The “nest” suggests quietness and protection, but once you go in, all is moving, all has its own dynamics, and you can find no familiar geometrical shape that may comfort you, all that surrounds you seems to be fluid.

MihaiPopescu focused on recycling, and used wood scrapings resulted from the production of Twins workshop. They were assembled in a seemingly chaotic order, which gave the solution to one of the intended research themes: a static atmosphere generated by big air volume. Therefore, the “movement” of the lines creates a special dynamics that gives the impression of a continuously changing place.

The elimination of all main geometrical shapes through ignoring corners and walls generate a fluid and moving place. This sensation is strengthened by the central bar, which, just like the totem placed outside the club, seems to create a whirlpool, which drags you to another world.
