This "two-schools-under-one roof" scheme accommodates elementary and middle schools in separate academic wings, with core shared resources at their intersection. The primary design challenge was to accommodate a large educational program within a dense urban neighborhood. The City of Malden also needed a building with expansion capacity to house an additional 200 students.
The simple L-shaped layout is composed of three segments: separate academic wings for each school, and a core block containing a gymnasium, cafeteria, and auditorium. The academic wings are expandable at each end to accommodate additional classrooms.
The design supports an international studies magnet theme with an emphasis on multiculturalism and foreign languages. Special features include a technology/language lab, a technical education lab, and a state-of-the-art media center.
This project marks the completion of a $118M citywide school revitalization program comprising five new K-8 neighborhood schools.
