Located just south of downtown on Main St. in Royal Oak, MI, The Flute House makes no subtle statement for Owners Erv and Susan Monroe. Mr. Monroe, the former principle flute of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is now the President of musical instrument manufacture Maramatsu America. The building is the flagship store for the Maramatsu America wing. The location makes a bold statement about the quality and the personality of its inhabitants. The challenge of combining the adaptive reuse of an automechanics garage and a new residential loft is no small feat. The resulting formal language that The Flute House embodies transcends local tendencies and asks questions about materiality and construction. The residential structure sits suspended above the existing building as an intention to allow the owner physical detachment from the business below. The Flute House approaches the expansion of pre-fabricated construction techniques as they relate to the digital platform in the design process setting. Structurally insulated panel systems, pre-cast concrete planking and steel utilizing moment connections are intended to provide a more efficient method of construction. Ultimately the entire confab is covered in a monolithic skin of Polyurea. Interior casework was designed and fabricated in-house, allowing the studio to control the experience of the space. Zebra, Walnut and Baltic Birch woods make up the majority of cabinetry while concrete counter tops enjoy integrated custom stainless steel wash basins. Visiting the lower level, patrons enjoy the sophisticated textures and surfaces cut from Baltic Birch.
