The flow and rememberance: Drinking fountain and the bench

SKUPAJ ARHITEKTI d.o.o. as Architects

In a small village Tisina in the north east of Slovenia we designed an area of rememberance in the park by the local church. Instead of putting up two classical bronze heads in the memory of two local priests we managed to persuade the local community to build a small landscape feature in the park, around the existing trees Tilia cordata. This was the spot where one of the priests used to rest. Although the materiality of the concrete bench fixes this site yet the lavitating character shows some sort of immateriality. The chronogram on the bech commemorates the priests. The drinking fountain bears a small bronze plaque which reads words from scripture in slovenian language: 'I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the Water of Life freely.’ (Rev 21:6) The water flows from the drinking fountain freely along the rounded concrete and describes patterns which appear and disappear. In time, the surface will start developing colours and textures of its own due to the water with much iron minerals content. The landscape is still yet in details constantly changing. It is a bench and a water fountain but also a memorial and a place where you lean forward to drink the water, read the words from scripture and observe the everchanging pattern of the water, dripping from your hands.
