Today’s education system calls for flexibility in the interior layout and functionality of school buildings. However, practical considerations also apply whereby this flexibility has to be reconciled with the requirements of the (planned) fire compartments.
The desire to create greater openness resulted in the incorporation of several ‘breathing spaces’ within the otherwise introvert character of the complex. A second aim was to improve the connection between the two buildings, ‘W-Hoog’ and ‘W-Laag’, each of which has its own specific typology. This was achieved by means of the ‘Adapter’, an intermediate meeting place which forms the central focus of the complex as a whole and interconnects its two functionalities.
