A family of four and a grandfather were moving back to familiar ground. In‐laws, siblings, aunts and uncles wanted to participate in the process with the new house on the common site. For all people the concept of living is strong. This mopo project is in search for architectonic qualities maneuvering in a strong willed landscape of emotion.
The dwelling is a home for two adults and two children, as well as a grandfather. The single family house and the flat shall function as separate units, but at the same time give opportunities for meetings between kin. All the functions are part of the one volume; the family house, the grandfather's flat and a garage. The house fulfills many functions with a focus on smaller, overlapping spaces. One is an office space that is a niche on the way to the master bed room, another is an extended space for play outside the children’s bedroom. The main common spaces overlap through a double high space.
The character of the site, with friends and kin on all sides, give many guidelines for positioning the volume on site. The neighbors' view, the sunny areas in the garden, the old apple trees and careful alterations of the terrain are all part of forming the dwelling; low towards west and higher towards east. The closeness to the neighboring houses results in specific solutions for daylight. Different roof lights towards the different skies let daylight into the spaces at certain times of the day.
The main construction of the house is wood, and the cladding is black painted pine. Almost all the interior is made of ash tree, apart from the ceiling that is birch plywood. In the making of the interior it was important to find a type of wood that technically could serve different purposes. The ash tree is strong enough to use as tread and as flooring. The ash is also easy to use as panels and balusters. The different dimensions of this same beautiful type of wood gives the interior a light and wholly character.
