Dutra Brown Building

Dutra Brown Building

Public as Architects

This structure is reminiscent of the old storage buildings that line the railroad tracks a block from the site. It is poured concrete and metal clad with a quaint, tiny grandmothers cottage perched on top. This three story, four unit apartment contains simple volumes and parts made of scavenged pieces from its fallen brothers. Sandwiched between 12" concrete block buttresses are immense steel and glass walls, salvaged portions of a Navy warehouse utilized for delivery by train. In addition to these two artifacts, 13- 5' X 5' metal frames with wire glass windows were salvaged and included in the porject. The front of the building contains unencumbered volume, with the back portion containing the stairs, plumbing, decks and mezzanines. The interior open plan was accommodated by an exterior rear stairway, hitting every level on the way up.

This live-work building was part of the Little Italy Neighborhood Development (LIND) project spearheaded by the redevelopment agency of the city of San Diego. It is a simple structure. It lets in light. It sits comfortably in the neighborhood. ublished in Architectural Record Magazine (March 1999), San Diego Home/Garden Magazine (June 1999) and Spazio Casa Magazine (December 1999 )
