Public spaces and urban restructuration

Following the important works or restructuration in the neighbourhood to the east and in the city centre, the politicians wanted at this period to act in the activity area and in the fallow lands to the west. This sector, with more than 2000 jobs has developed without much coordination. The objective of the study is to produce a reference map for the south-west city entrance and the renovation of the activity area.

The project proposes to restructure the road integrating it into the urban system of the city and creating a new link between West and South. A reflection was made for the displacements to get continuity for the cycle and pedestrian circulations, but also for the bus service. The idea is to intensify the existing occupations and to limit the urban sprawl. For each scale of the site, various ways to circulate are imagined and different typologies of building is created to give as much comfort as possible for the inhabitants.

The road RD 14 which crosses the site is totally requalified, with the creation of a big square to mark the entrance of the city and the activity zone. Equipments along the street qualify the elevations and give the possibility for a densification on the existing site. Public spaces share rightly the area with pedestrians, services and vegetation.

The mission was decomposed in 4 phases. The diagnosis gave the urban malfunctions from the city scale to the industrial scale. Sketches were then done, according different scripts (metropolitan centre, eco-comfort, urban-mix) and the study partners validated a reference map, with some defined operations. After the selection of priority areas, a basic preliminary design with the public spaces development was created and cost.
