An energy-efficient facelift for almost any older building

ETICS, or rendered facades can be an effective, economical means of accomplishing multiple objectives. They can help boost energy efficiency, enhance comfort and safety and improve a structure's appearance. For older buildings such as the four tower blocks comprising the Dallfield Court housing estate in Dundee, Scotland, an ETICS solution can extend service life by decades, with twenty-first century energy performance. ROCKWOOL ETICS solutions are affordable and easy to install, while offering all the benefits of a stone wool solution. The clean, energy-saving tower blocks at Dallfield Court show how this solution can provide an energy-efficient facelift for almost any older building.

A new lease on life for aging tower blocks

The Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP) is a UK government scheme that requires public utilities to invest in improving the energy efficiency of social housing units. When the Dundee City Council learned that the aging Dallfield Court housing estate was eligible, they got in touch with British Gas, who would run the refurbishment project. In this case, the project involved applying an ETICS - or rendered facade - solution to the outside walls of the four tower blocks and replacing four older boiler systems with a more efficient district heating solution. ECL Contracts Ltd., owned by British Gas, carried out the facade renovation, which was overseen by Paul Roles, BG's Northern Area Solid Wall Manager. "It's a 100 mm system," says Mr Roles, "with ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation underneath and an exterior coating of silicone."

When asked why he specified ROCKWOOL insulation for the job, Mr Roles said, "the truth is, I wouldn't want to put people in a building that was insulated with anything else." Explaining that fire safety was his overriding concern - in addition to thermal protection, of course - Mr Roles said the ROCKWOOL Group's technical backup and strong reputation as a premium product were also important factors.
