2009 – 2012 aayu architects transformed the monumental Da Vinci School(built in 1886) in Amsterdam into a multifunctional accommodation for classes, a nursery and a day care center, dance, theatre and yoga classes.
aayu provided all phases, from energy- and heritage concept to supervision on-site. The power lies in old-fashioned cooperation with craftsmen to fully understand a building process and develop practical and beautiful solutions together.
Energy saving is achieved through insulation, using building mass and renewable sources like solar panels that are placed out of sight. Old materials are re-used, new materials are re-usable and all operations are reversible.
According to the physics of historical buildings, the entire skin is vapor permeably insulated.
Low-temperature heating in the floor and walls provides a comfortable and healthy indoor climate, supported by daylight-controlled lighting and CO2-driven, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
Biologic renovation preserves the buildings monumental value, and creates high future value. Multifunctional design turns it into a child-friendly heritage building, with a lot of edible and ‘playable’ green, encouraging the biodiversity of the city.
Biologic heritage building = Future meets History, today.
