Once a place of the English landscape garden, this quarter will soon be where past, present and future, young and old, residents and visitors come together. An alternative location that fits the tradition of the typical squares, streets, and parks Assen knows so well. With a new square, the Pelinckhof, and a new culture centre, the Nieuwe Kolk will become a social meeting place. It will not only be a new meeting place for the culturally minded people of Assen, but also part of the lively route between the market and the shops around the Koopmansplein. And in summer, you can see the yachts sail merrily into the Vaart canal.
It will be a new monument, located on the ring road around the centre where the court, City Hall, the Museum of Drenthe and the Jozef Church were built before. It will house a theatre, a cinema, a visual arts centre, a library, and of course the Grand-Café. A glass conservatory will be added to the old distillery on the canal, and an historic wall and monumental stair will connect the Pelinckhof with its direct surroundings. The square forms a ‘cultural hub’, where all activities come together. The building also has a large number of houses.
