This September, critically acclaimed British designer Lee Broom once again completely transforms his East London studio during the London Design Festival. For the third year, in what is becoming a studio tradition, the space will be unrecognisable from the year before for this unique event. This year, the must-see destination becomes the Crystal Bulb Shop, a general store complete with sawdust floor, mahogany counter and a shopkeeper. It will also mark the first time the Crystal Bulb will be shown in the UK.
Another manifestation of Broom’s award-winning interior design talent, the Crystal Bulb Shop is a contemporary take on an old shop with a surreal twist. Old fittings are juxtaposed against panels reflecting over 200 Crystal Bulbs. Visitors will also be given a unique insight into how the product is manufactured through a short film on the making of the bulb in the Cumbria Crystal factory.
Following the hugely successful launch of The Crystal Bulb at Lee Broom’s first, Milan solo exhibition Public House at the Salone del Mobile this April, it is set to become one of the designer’s most iconic products. Taking inspiration from the delicate craftsmanship of crystal cutting, the Crystal Bulb combines industrial influences with decorative qualities, transforming the everyday light bulb into an ornamental light fitting.
A bulb for life, the Crystal Bulb is designed to fit any standard ceiling, wall or lamp fitting, and can be hung alone or in clusters, as well as used with a light shade to create enchanting light effects.
Individually hand blown, each lead Crystal Bulb is then cut with the classic crystal pattern and etched with a Lee Broom logo. Broom has collaborated with Cumbria Crystal, the sole remaining producer of hand-made English full lead crystal in the UK, keeping true to his signature design ethos of working with British craftsmen. The Crystal Bulb can be purchased on its own or with the brushed brass pendant fitting. Each pendant fitting includes the gold silk flex colour matched to the fitting and a brushed brass ceiling rose. The pendant fittings are also engraved with the Lee Broom Crest.
“Each year the London Design Festival provides a great opportunity for me to completely transform my studio and showroom. I’m particularly excited to see my vision of the Crystal Bulb Shop come to life and look forward to opening the doors to the public and design community”,
