Crypt of Otranto's Cathedral

FèRiMa as Architects

The crypt is the most obvious plot between east and west of the Mediterraneus, and enhances the union of the peoples of this sea. Intent in its construction were involved arabian, apulian-lombard stonemasons.

The restoration project involved the interior of the crypt as a whole, from the columns to the capitals, to the creation of a new paving stone of Trani above crawl space, the recovery of the existing window frames and doorways, the system micro LED lighting.

The presence of rising damp affecting the entire substrate and the old stone floor and the perimeter walls of the bays up to the tax.

During the working for the crawl space emerged the bases of the shafts of the columns, that consist of friezes carved with hellenistic decorations “fitoformi”. New discoveries have been brought to view through a frame made of corten steel and tempered laminated glass, so you can admire the incredible discovery. This intervention has allowed us to revise the format of the new pavement recovering the composition of the pavement of 1835 where there was a uniform floor with simple cuts between a plate and the other of size 83x83 cm. In this way are highlighted and enhanced the columns and capitals, and the system architecture of the crypt.

Other interventions have affected the recovery and replacement of deteriorated windows, l 'adaptation to the legislation disabled people through the' introduction of a steel ramp and a new lighting installation art. To give a spatial reading to the crypt, but also to be read element during liturgical functions have been conceived three phases of illumination, the liturgical basic, that of solemn liturgy, that of the basic lighting with lighting of the frescoes, the strictly artistic with a gradual enlightenment of the architectural.
