Collective housing for mentally disabled

Collective housing for mentally disabled

Huiswerk architecten as Architects

The project includes 12 assisted living studios and associated spaces for the non-profit organization Ons Tehuis Brabant in Kampenhout.   The site is an empty lot in a new subdivision.   The new building has little relationship to the existing buildings in the area.   The assisted living project consists of a concrete outer shell and an inner shell in brown-red fibre cement panels. The concrete outer shell gives the building a public character, which benefits the street. The loggia on the floor emphasizes this generous gesture.   The red inner shell subtlety externalizes the interior of the building. The entrance area is marked by an incision alongside the street. Along the southeast side of the building the loggia and terrace canopy both become double height. Here the slender building turns its head towards the garden.   The plan is symmetrically organized into four clusters. Three of the clusters contain the 12 studios; the fourth cluster is reserved for common functions and a studio for the supervisor. The studios on the ground floor are larger in order to be used by wheelchair users. Each cluster is designed around a common space for group activities.
