Open design competition for a 1500 spaces car park

The challenge of this competition was to provide a combined car park for 1500 carswith exhibition and multi-functional areas. We decided to use an automated parking system which provided huge savings interms of GFA and allowed us to present the cars as if exhibited in a giant “shopwindow”.The exhibition areas are punched through the car storage areas and the innerworkings of the “machine” become visible to all that visit manifested as part of thebuilding experience.

Cars are handled by an automatic and computerised loading and storing machinery(Pallets) suppressing the need to drive in individual spaces (no exhaust fumes),increasing the GFA efficiency: conventional car park ratio of 20-23m2/car, AutomatedParking 16.7m2/car.Customers are not allowed inside the storage (suppression of exit stairs and relatedsecurity arrangements), the loading and retrieval of cars is at ground floor through theautomated system. The system allows for increased Exhibition area (~2,200m2 vs. 900m2) for the sametotal GFA of 30,000m2.

Key points:

• Integration of public spaces within the car storage : view of the inner workings ofthe Machine/Storage. • The machinery allows for cars to be loaded on last floor for car related eventsand car shows. • Connection between the Hong Kong Town Hall and the Parking Wedding venue. • Top Floor for public functions with views over the city. • Landscaped Roof garden • Capacity : 1583 cars | More than 2000 m2 of Exhibition area | 31298 m2 in totalGFA
