Broadfields Primary School is the second school to be designed as part of London Borough of Barnet’s ‘Primary Schools Capital Investment Programme’.
The proposed school will replace two existing infants and junior schools, and will allow for a Two Form Entry school. It will have the capacity for 420 pupils plus the equivalent of 39 full time nursery spaces, and there will also be a provision for an Autistic Spectrum unit for up to 16 children.
The new school will have most of the teaching accommodation in a crescent-shaped two storey building facing the playing fields and the green belt land. The Autistic Spectrum unit, the halls and administration accommodation will all be single storey high, with the crescent shape defining The Heart, a double height space at the centre of the building, with multifunction purpose, which is effectively the centre of the school. The main entrance will open onto a public piazza to the south of the site, which will be accessed via a segregated vehicle/pedestrian access road.
Several renewable technologies will be included within the scheme, the most significant of these being a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) installation, which will both heat the building in the winter months and provide a measure of cooling in the summer. Additional renewable technologies also included are, photovoltaic cells and hot water solar tubes, which are both beneficial for the building and have an educational impact.
