Two owners, having separately searched for larger houses, joined together to renovate and transform the “back end” of their pair of Bondi semi-detached houses.
To the street, the renovation has a gable roof form following the line of the existing building, whilst to the rear the roof has been inverted to form a butterfly, creating dramatic spaces and increased daylight. The butterfly roof form contains double height living rooms opening on to North facing courtyards, while the gable form houses the master bedrooms and ensuites above the existing building.
Under the expressive roof form, contemporary open living spaces and existing period rooms are stitched together with an abundance of natural light. The new roof form is lined with a visually warm plywood ceiling, which acts as a counter point to the cool grey polished concrete floor. All new walls are painted plasterboard.
