Banca Lombarda Headquarters

Banca Lombarda Headquarters

Gregotti Associati International as Architects

The new Banca Lombarda Headquarters in Brescia is located in an urban development area called “Brescia 2,” and constitutes the first construction, as provided for in the plan for dividing the owned areas into lots. The intervention concerns an area of around 150,695 square feet overall. It develops an alternative to the edifices with thick towers used as solutions to problems raised by the high concentration of tertiary businesses. A virtually cubic volume was created that measures 164 feet on each side and is made up of two lateral wings for operative offices. It has a volume perpendicular to these on a northward axis that delimits a covered public entrance courtyard and offers a series of connections on the fourth side where another truncated pyramid-shaped volume cuts into the cubic articulation. This peculiar pyramidal architectural element has two large meeting rooms (seating 500 and 150 respectively), which are also accessible independently for public use. Three orders of large metal trusses, on two levels corresponding with the north stairway, partly suspend and partly support the upper floors of the offices. The volume includes eleven residential levels in addition to the first floor and the technical floor, for an overall height of around 177 feet. Outside, the building has four stair towers at the corners that are clad in marble, just as the covering over the congress hall is. The other elevations have different solutions with continuous glass façades, particularly for the east and west wings where glass brick alternates with transparent glass. The suspended section has a façade with a “double skin” that has sun blinds on the southern side while the entrance courtyard has continuous glazed façades. Completing the scheme are basement levels: two beneath the building and three outside, in addition to the piazza made up of spaces surrounding the building. Overall the headquarters distributes 262,639 square feet of paved flooring, 290,625 square feet in the floors underground, a 721,182 square feet piazza, 6,458 square feet of entrance court, and 269,098 square feet of underground parking.
