“A New Landmark for Antalya” was opened to competition by the Municipality of Kepez, which is a major tourism city in the Mediterranean Coast of Turkey. Competition asked the participants to propose a new “Landmark” that will introduce city of Antalya to the world; while being a public cultural and activity center for urban daily life.
1+1 Architects were awarded the first prize with their proposal. The project primarily questions the state of being a unique “landmark” whilesimultaneusly adapting itself to the natural landscape. The intention is to composea landmark which works as a part of a system that is adaptable to the natural context, topography and changing urban environment.
The proposed landmark-building is an “opened crown” metaphorically, which refers to the meaning of the word “Kepez”. Building is located on the peak of the plotwhich has an open view to the Antalya Gulf and the city center.
As an urban park, project site is considered with different zonesin accordance with the morphological characteristics of the site. The upper platform that the landmark building is locatedis defined as the “Spine”,and isthe most activated routeof the project that can reach to all proposed zones.
The site is planned as a pedestrian friendly site in total. Within the site, experiencing nature and the landscape by walking, jogging, bycle, and other alternative vehiclesisproposed. Being in the Mediterranean climateis adeterminative forthe structural organization of the building; an open circulation system and semi-open spaces are proposed for providingnatural ventilation. Sustainable systems such as collecting rain water for green areas and using sun power for lighting and other energy needsare planning to be employed within the application process.
