Strongly influenced by its relationship to the picturesque Bras d’ Or Lake in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Alderwood Rest Home provides long term care for 70 residents.

The narrow, steeply sloped site and beautiful views inform the partial 2-storey design which accommodates 70 people in 6 resident houses. Four of the resident houses enjoy direct access to landscaped courtyards while two houses, located on an upper level, are provided with a generous terrace with excellent south-facing views of the Lake.

The main entrance, multi-purpose room and front porch are grouped together as a “Manor House” form to break down the scale of the overall building and establish a familiar, welcoming face for the home. The design utilizes materials and forms that create a meaningful, contemporary interpretation of local traditions and building methods. The prominent front porch, extensive views and sloped roofs capture the spirit of maritime architecture creating a comfortable home for residents that have lived most of their lives with a strong connection to the sea.
