Together with Public Works and Water Management and Prorail, the province of Gelderland has created 9 eco passages – this is fantastic for the natural environment. The passages are also large social art-works (spanning up to 50m), which will have a major impact on the surrounding spatial qualities.

Eco passages are created above or below roads and motorways that pass directly through beautiful natural landscapes. This places quality demands on landscape compatibility and structural appearance. This can be judged by the level of integration into the landscape and the appearance from the concerned road.

A degree of continuity is created in the road’s appearance by not disturbing the central and side reservations of the road. To communicate the specific function of the artwork to road users, the edges are shaped like a mound which is supported by a concrete portal. The portal creates a clear relationship between the organic nature of the eco passage and the steady rhythm of the motorway. Above the side detail, a composition of wooden strips provides an abstract image of a forest’s edge. Despite the different settings of the eco passages, the elegant portal creates an identity that connects all passages to each other.
