Hawker Stall Exhibit of the 2009 Hong Kong & Shenzhen

Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture

EVENT BACKGROUND

15:15´s Rain Catcher is one of the exhibits of the 2009 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture.

THE BRIEF

Responding to an open call for submissions focused on designing a contemporary interpretation of the outdoor Hawker Stalls commonly found in older street markets across Hong Kong, we have won an opportunity to build a Hawker Stall that is 180-200cm wide x 225-250cm high x 100-125cm deep spatial volume; typical of Hong Kong Hawker Stalls. Further the booth shall be conceived as a modular object that could eventually be multiplied. 3:15pm is the unofficial tea time for Hong Kong workers and the usual tea time destinations are these outdoor Hawker Stalls.

WELCOME TO OUR DAI PAI DONG (HAWKER STAND)

Our mission is to build an innovative Hawker Stall (Dai Pai Dong) which celebrates this unique local heritage and design spectacle. Our design pays tribute to Dai Pai Dong - the silent observer of the city´s growth and prosperity. Within a larger context, the event is to celebrate the Hong Kong spirit (versatile, innovative, unified) through the analogy of rain. To enhance the mobility of the Hawker Stall design, the structure also functions as a rain collector: the collected water acted as the weight which anchors the structure on ground. The collected water is filtered and may be used for washing. With the support of our collaborator - Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Department of Electronic Engineering, we aim to produce an architecture with the latest display end energy technologies.

15:15 RAIN CATCHER

Let´s celebrate Rain HK / Shenzhen = Monsoon climate We love Rain, we hate Rain, we Cantons LIVE Rain Have you ever seen the colour of Rain? A shelter shields us from the weather. A shelter can be simple, a house, a cave, a space suit, an umbrella. The hawker centre embodied the simplest manifestation of a shelter – a shelter to cook, to eat and to interact. Have you thought of an inverted umbrella, the nature of the umbrella changes radically when it is simply inverted; it became a rain collector. We are creating a collective Rain Collector, let´s flesh out the true colour, the sound and the poetics of Rain.
