“JACINT VERDAGUER” SQUARE IN GRANOLLERS, BARCELONA

mipmarí arquitectura i disseny as Architects

The starting project is an old square, with a classic configuration, enclosed by an outer ring of shrubs and slender pines with stability problems. The vehicular traffic system is proposed to transform the concept of "island" for "peninsula" by removing the old way on the south side, so that additional surface is gained. The functional needs of the site required that a restricted use path was maintained at the plaza level.

The premise of integrating in the new planning a pre-existing representative central element (fountain and bust honoring Jacint Verdaguer --great Catalan poet of the XIXth century, for whom the square was named after-- a circular pavement and oaks ring around) becomes the starting point of the proposal: a set of organic forms orbiting around creating platforms, living areas, stages for entertainment events, children's play area and plant beds, as well as the relocation of pre-existing urban furniture.

What is achieved is a variety of organic elements that appear randomly deposited with different uses, topography and textures. Elements that rise subtly leading to a continuity of pedestrian flows that cross the void, the city.
