Saint Joseph Hospital

Davis Partnership Architects as Architects

In 2010 Davis Partnership and H+L Architecture formed a joint venture in order to provide design services for the new Saint Joseph replacement hospital. ZGF was selected as the design Architect and Mortenson Construction the CM/GC. Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital formulated a collaborative process as part of the design construction team’s contracts which will effectively be the basis for an Integrated Project Delivery.

The replacement facility will be turned over to the hospital in September of 2014 requiring an aggressive fast track schedule. Construction began in July of 2011 with the demolition of three existing structures and the realignment of Downing Street. Excavation and foundation work began in November of 2011.

The new facility will provide 826,143 square feet of new diagnostic, treatment and patient care spaces. Thirty-nine new rooms designed for surgery and interventional procedures will increase the hospital’s ability to deliver efficient, state of the art, surgical and interventional care and 360 single occupancy patient rooms throughout the facility will improve patient outcomes and create an environment for family centered care. 2442 total parking spaces, including 2 new parking garages, will provide convenient access to the hospital for patients, visitors and staff. In addition a 19,131 square foot central utility plant West of Downing Street will provide emergency power, chilled water and steam for the new facilities.

In developing the Master Plan for the campus and the design of new structures, consideration was given to the long term development of the rest of the campus. Future development will be focused to the west of Ogden for the development of additional medical office space, and to the east of Humboldt for the expansion of hospital related programs.

The building massing has been carefully configured and placed on the site to comply with the city’s view plane ordinance. The highest patient floor is oriented in the east/west direction to present the narrowest profile when viewed from City Park. The north/south legs of the patient floors step down toward 20th Avenue and allow unobstructed views of the mountains to the west of the city. The present design does not block any mountain views from City Park and although the building’s upper floors penetrate the view plane, the design complies with the intent of the ordinance.

Service access for delivery trucks and ambulances will be from Downing Street between 19th and 20th Avenues. A ramp will take trucks and delivery vans down to loading docks at the lower level of the hospital. Ambulances will access the emergency department from Downing Street on a separate ramp up to the first floor emergency entrance.. Concentrating service and ambulance access from Downing Street will help to keep commercial traffic within the campus to a minimum. 20th Avenue will be extended East to Franklin Street and will become a pedestrian friendly street with bike lanes on both sides and it will be the primary surface connection to the Kaiser Campus.
