SECOND PRIZE AWARD - AK0074 Project by Polish team: Katarzyna Toczynska, Katarzyna Lesniewska and Alicja Wozniak
Exceptional project that is rich and varied working with one single theme: the variations in scale of the stairs/steps element. The reference to the steps and terraces of Douro and Porto is clear, but also interestingly adapted to the functional needs of the place. It gets its shape in reaction to the immediate surroundings and successfully integrates them with the functions required.
The path is composed of different moments, which evolve from a more rational framework to a more organic moment, when meeting the greener slope. The existing green structure of the river is maintained and integrated to provide greater value to the proposal. A concern is also expressed into how the pool elements can act as water filtering system, improving the water quality for public swimming as also with the water that should return to the River.
From the author: “The starting point of the idea of public space along the Porto waterfront was the tectonics of surrounding landscape. This action is not just a aestheticizing formal procedure, but allows the creation of variety of bathing and recreational spaces. By using the natural advantages of location, we retain the existing rocks and greenery as well including them in our design. Pool promenade was designed to minimalize environmental impact by use of natural materials, transforming the river stream into energy as well as recycling and reusing of polluted water from Douro River.”
