The Convertible Space

The Convertible Space

Elmar Ludescher Architekt as Architects

High above the creek and flanked by a steep slope, the house is dramatically orientated towards the valley. The scenic view reaches from the city towards the lake. In its exposed position, the upper floor is almost pending with its wide bearing-outs. Like an aerie, the fine wooden structure creates a passage between inside and outside. A moveable wooden curtain filters the light and offers intimacy at the same time. This is where the living area lies. Completely lined with knotless silver fir, the house invites to wonder, to smell and to walk barefoot. The built-in closets are also made out of silver fir and are flush-mounted to the wall, floor and ceiling. The unique use of the material and the skillful mise-en-scène of different space constellations create an exciting and varied experience. It's as if the house is communicating with its surroundings. Single levels of the multi-layered shell can be moved – transforming viewpoints into protective walls – revealing surprising scenery elsewhere. During hot summer days, the living area gains another room by opening a curtain that's made out of sailing canvas. The firmament is framed through the oval opening in the ceiling. In a pronounced location, an immense sandstone penetrates the glass shell. Towards the terrace, it acts as a fireplace, whereas on the opposite side, it serves as a stove to heat the living room – a central place of rest and orientation on the horizon. The exterior chimney evokes maritime associations – the steamer is on course.
