Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC)

HOK as Architects

“It is an innovative piece of architecture. The form is one of beauty and simplicity. The use of integrated design and modeling optimized the structure.” AIA Technology in Architectural Practice Award Jury

As the premier transportation hub in Southern California, the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center brings together transit, dining, retail and entertainment options in an iconic terminal building.

ARTIC is a world-class gateway for Orange County’s transportation systems, including auto, bus and rail systems as well as future street car and high-speed trains. Iconic infrastructure projects like Broad Street Station in Philadelphia and the original Penn Station in New York City inspired the design of the long-span, diagrid structure, creating a grand, naturally lit space.

The new transit hub will accommodate Anaheim’s projected growth of 13 percent by 2035 while transforming the city from a drivable suburb to a model for walkable urban development. As the heart of Orange County’s transportation system, ARTIC will provide easy connectivity between entertainment destinations, sports venues and the Anaheim Convention Center.

The interdisciplinary design team of HOK and Parsons Brinckerhoff focused on efficient, parabolic shell geometry through the design of a catenary curve swept on a torus. More than 200,000 square feet of high-tech, translucent ETFE polymer pillows on the roof structure infuse the grand hall with lightness and transparency. Operable louvers at the top of the north and south curtain walls open to allow for natural ventilation of the space.

Providing space for passenger arrivals, departures and transfers, the terminal integrates amenities such as transit-oriented retail, specialty dining, Wi-Fi and charging stations, parking, bike racks and lockers, and community space.

The innovative sustainable design strategies for this anticipated LEED® Platinum building will dramatically reduce energy use, water use, solid waste production and carbon emissions while spurring transit-oriented development.

The team made extensive use of building information modeling (BIM) to clearly communicate the design to the clients and public, as well as to help develop the complex form, geometry and functions while achieving the goals for sustainability.
