Renovation of a 45 square meter apartment in Rome

This 45 square meter apartment was previously the building’s water deposit area. The idea was to make a clean open space. A continuous line draws, defines and highlights the space edges: the baseboard connects all the angles of the apartment; down the wall up the door, under the bookshelf and the closet and around the window, creating rhythm, unity and flow. To maximize space, a bookshelf was designed - this see-through multi-function furniture works as a dining table on one side and on the other as a desk: this 2 features fold into the same element. The bookshelf not only gives a intimacy to the bedroom but it also provides light, perspective and depth to the space. A travertine cube organizes the space and hides some pipes that couldn't be removed due to its former use: water deposit and machine room. All illumination is based on indirect lightning: lines of light on the entrance hall and light points - the bookshelf frames the skylight adding extra light to the living room. The kitchen and bathroom’s floors and walls have the same material –microcement- which provides a simple, clean and continuous space.
