Patio House

Henkin Shavit Architecture and Design as Architects

Interior design, consisting of one level in the form of the letter Het in Hebrew. The house surrounds an inner courtyard / patio in a manner similar to that of a traditional Arab house.

It contains one public space including a kitchen, dining room, living room and shelter (safe room), on the right-hand side is the children's wing which contains a family room, bedrooms, bathrooms, the left-hand wing contains the master bedroom including an en suite bathroom and office. The project aims to maintain a constant sense of balance between the interior and the exterior.

The finishes, flooring and coating –beginning at the front door, which had the existing color peeled off and removed, was hand polished and covered in a lacquer. The existing porcelain tile floor, was covered with carefully selected wide boards of aged natural oak parquet. The kitchen isle was covered with natural butcher oak, 2 inch thick, with an oil finish.

Electric and lighting- the house was equipped with a new electrical system with an emphasis on functional and decorative lighting. The lamps were purchased at the "Beauty Mark" located in Jaffa's flea market and were hung over the isle in the kitchen, they were attached to a lighting track in order to avoid excessive damage to the concrete ceiling, unnecessary lowering of the ceiling and in order to make use of the full non-standard ceiling height (330 cm).Similarly, functional spotlights were placed on a lighting track, which highlights the circulation routes at night, forming a cage of light encompassing those sitting on the patio. Over the dining room is a light created by the German lighting designer was hung, it allows for an easy going feeling in the space and is affected by the air moving in the space, both by air from outside and by the black fan in the living room (Wortiche – an Italian brand purchased at "Ayelet Lighting").

Furnishings – the dining room furniture consists of a round table made of white Formica, made for an office space, bought at "Waxman", around it are white "Eames" chairs purchased at the "Items" gallery in the Jaffa flea market. In the family room, it was decided to make use of industrial shelves of "Boochvalter" working in conjunction with "Hapach" which is owned by the landlord, these contrast the warm parquet on which they are placed and are easy for the kids to access. The kitchen isle was equipped with black bar chairs from "Pick-Up Bar Chairs", which provide a dinning solution around the isle.
