Skatepark Sixhaven Amsterdam

Skatepark Sixhaven Amsterdam

OFMAA Architects as Architects

Preface At the end of december 2013 Amsterdam lost it's internationally renown Skatepark on the NDSM wharf. Due to the noise of the skaters, congregation decided to redevelop the location, leaving the 1700m2 Amsterdam Skatepark and its (yearly 50.000) inhabitants homeless.

An opportunity arose when an open competition started for a location next to the EYE Filmmuseum and the IJ river. This made OFMAA and Skatepark Amsterdam decide to develop a plan for a Skatepark Amsterdam 2.0.

Location The location is situated on the other side of the IJ river, right across Central Station. It contains the old home of the harbourmaster of the adjacent marina with a big garden.

Building In our proposal we cover the whole plot with a 5 meter high roof. A steel construction, glass walls and rough underlayment flooring complete the building.

On the east side the plot is extended over 5 meters onto the water, giving the skaters the opportunity to skate completely outdoors. In summer the glass wall can be partially opened.

The harbour house The house is an interesting relic of a 'pasted' era. A little bit lost in it's recently redeveloped riverbed. This made us decide to keep the house, but as a silhouette.

First we covered it with plating and opened the ground floor, making it possible for the skater to experience the house from the out and inside.

Secondly we made the big roof descent in the middle toward the first floor of the house. Making the top floor of the house sticking through the roof. The new club house. Entrance To increase income (of the already financially sound organization), the entrance is lifted, creating a first floor for a Skate shop.

European Competitions The location is one of the most beautiful spaces of Amsterdam. On a daily basis cruise ships pass by on a 30m distance, central station, ferries and 270 degrees over the river make it really special to skate here. To facilitate european competitions on this amazing skate track, mobile floating stands can be attached to the park, making it a unique experience.
