House Tsi

Nico van der Meulen Architects as Architects

The three dimensionality of this contemporary home is celebrated with intersecting planes of steel and glass ‘hovering’ above the solid elements of concrete, stone and plastered brick work The layout centers around the double volume living spaces and dining areas. Brise soleil was used extensively to control the amount of sun in the house, whilst also creating privacy, depth and layering. The home fuses aesthetics and functionality and meets the home owner’s requirements for cutting-edge design, with a definite South African identity.

The dining area is placed on a stone gabion platform to enhance the views towards the garden. Although designed to be private, the open plan kitchen is not entirely enclosed as it leads into the indoor pool area that has a built-in bar. The Large walls were built with gabions and the family room walls have steel cladding. The staircase is built with bent steel sheets, whilst polished concrete floors were used through-out the ground floor.

The indoor pool and living areas are enclosed with stacking frameless glass doors resulting in a seamless indoor-outdoor transition to the patio. M Square Lifestyle Design selected a color palette that was monochromatic with accents of red drawn from the external finish specification set out by the architect. The idea was to create a holistic edifice, where the boundaries from inside to out are diffused. Steel, stone, concrete and glass were used extensively. The look of the home was completed with contemporary furniture supplied by M Square Lifestyle Necessities. such as Molteni & C, Horm, Fantoni, Fontana Arte, Tom Dixon and Foscarini.
