San Manuel de la Estrella Chapel

Cruz and Browne Arquitectos as Architects

It is to be acknowledged that the conception of architectural work and space are generated in the architectural tradition in the sense of “being space".

Therefore, we are located at a certain distance of the works forming its collection. Tradition does not refer to forms as "forms" to imitate, but, instead, forms in the way of sense; tradition is a present presence and not a reminisce.

We say so, since this chapel could hardly had been conceived without referring us to the “Fundo los Pajaritos Chapel” work of the Instituto de Arquitectura UCV in 1953 and to the Benedictine Monastery and the Santísima Trinidad Chapel in 1962, Las Condes, Santiago Chile

We can summarize our architectural concerns in the following topics:

1-Taking care to build an interior that rises up from the liturgical reality, therefore making this chapel not a temple, but a place that fully shall embrace the event, the meeting and the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist with His people.

2-An awareness so to make sure that the “architectural form” is "effective". This means building up the inside limits without appeal to images of other realities. Efficacy in the way we have associated with the construction of a peaceful atmosphere; thus the inner form presides and governs the outside form.

3 – Taking care of materiality, light and acoustics. Three dimensions of the architectural space construction that must converge and form a unit. Matter as forming the boundaries of the building, light as an expression of supernatural dimension and acoustics for the full announcement of word.

4 – A watch out to secure firmness (resistance), duration (maintenance) and permanence (plastic) built work, so as to safeguard the shape does not degrade over time, a form that takes care of itself.
