CWB Architects as Architects

The award-winning Atlantic Theater Company is an Off-Broadway theater founded by William H. Macy and David Mamet. Following the completion of the ATC Stage 2 project, CWB was retained by the Atlantic Theater Company to renovate its main stage facility, the Linda Gross Theater, located inside the Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall on West 20th Street.

A main goal of the renovation intent was to expand the main theater’s seating capacity and stage depth. The backstage area was completely reconfigured and seating was gained by edging the control booth into the lobby zone. The capacity of the lobby was significantly increased by excavating into the floor below. At the lower lobby, a bar and lounge area for patrons is now accommodated. Throughout the theater, old and new masonry and concrete structural elements are exposed to reveal the evolution of the building.

In addition to the renovation, a unique metal sign was designed by Emphas!s Design Inc. to highlight the names of donors supporting the efforts of the Atlantic Theater Company. The sign creates a visual connection between the upper and lower lobby areas.

The blue stage set is from the show “3 Kinds of Exile” by John Guare, Directed by Neil Pepe, Sets by Takeshi Kata, and Lighting by Donald Holder
