There was a time when the benefits of healthy, comfortable sitting on a good office chair were advertised by highlighting its functional and technical features. Producers felt a need to detail the nuts and bolts of the construction, while the possible scope of the design was left to the more intuitive to work out. Functionality was key, design conventional. But the times they are a-changing – and people’s needs alongside them.
New concepts are born out of breaking with tradition, new ways of thinking, the intelligent merging of past and present. Thomas Starczewski, proprietor of designship in Ulm and designer of Volume 8, explains the thinking behind the concept: “When the styling of office chairs appears to be merging into an amorphous mass, then it is high time to question what lies behind their design. This is the point at which we may safely abandon the mechanical consideration of technological features and ergonomic benefits and accept these as a given. The launch of Volume 8 sees comfort and emotion take centre stage. Sumptuous volume and skilfully crafted details raise this chair above mere considerations of efficiency in the workplace and project it into the comfort zone of our private world.”
By implementing these ideas, interstuhl continues to pursue its course of elevating the accepted concept of the office chair onto a whole new dimension. Volume 8 is an innovative office chair designed to comply with the most stringent professional demands of the modern office but which simultaneously embraces the special and the unique. What makes Volume 8 different is not just its exceptional functionality but the promise of homely comfort expressed by the expansive volume of its inviting seat. Any associations evoked by this unique chair with classical upholstered furniture are not quite accidental. Anyone lucky enough to claim Volume 8 as their chair in the office will bring a little bit of home to the workplace, while home workers can enjoy the luxury of a comfortable office chair with a truly professional edge.
While its technological and ergonomic aspects are not what initially draw our attention to Volume 8, these hidden and essential features do not disappoint. The operating elements on the seat to adjust the seat height and to lock the synchronous mechanism are within easy reach and designed to be clearly distinguishable. Another comfort feature is the facility for backrest height adjustment. This provides optimum lumbar support by applying only slight pressure for individual adjustment to the needs of different body sizes and weights. The synchronous mechanism moves the seat surface synchronously relative to the backrest. Leaning back causes the seat surface to lower, providing optimum active dynamic sitting comfort. Leaning back is made exceptionally comfortable by an extra-large opening angle between seat and backrest – without causing the dreaded shirt-riding-up effect. The newly developed synchronous mechanism also offers convenient weight regulation: The backrest support force can be steplessly and precisely adjusted to the weight of the user. Depending on individual preferences, the Volume 8 can be supplied with T or ring arm rests, either of which are height adjustable. There are two office swivel chair variants to choose from with different backrest heights, as well as two types of conference chair.
These features efficiently address every conceivable requirement in an ergonomic office chair – but above and beyond these benefits the Volume 8 offers an aesthetic appeal which is second to none. Top-quality upholstery in felt or leather combines with superbly crafted workmanship details to create a truly unique appearance.
The exceptional design quality is reflected to particularly good effect by the natural aniline leather upholstery option, whose contrasting seams lend a striking added dimension to the overall look. And if all this individuality is not enough, the Volume 8 can be individually tailored to address specific needs and manufactured either as a oneoff or a series which is completely unique to you.
With the Volume 8, interstuhl is breaking completely new ground. Moving away from the “sitting machine” that has dominated decades of office furniture design, this chair embraces a new and contemporary form of furniture, one which blends into any environment but which can be adjusted to different user needs. Volume 8 will see the dawning of an era in which a new volume, a new dimension serves the needs, both functional and emotional, of a discerning target group: Thinking people who take a conscious view of living and working, who embrace individuality, consumer awareness and sustainability. People who will turn Volume 8 into an icon of design for a new generation.
