Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi and the authentic beauty of the natural raw materials, a surface was developed that reflects the true nature of the materials based on the concept of “refined nature”. Wabi-sabi is an aesthetic concept that is closely associated with Japan and Zen Buddhism – the highly developed culture of the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete, which is reflected in a freedom of shapes, sublime colours and formal simplicity. Rieder understands how to preserve and maintain simplicity through its fascination with the natural and accidental as a sensitive architectural means of expression.

A new production technique allows Rieder to restore the lively surface of the panels characteristic of concrete using an interplay of shades and cloud effects. The natural imperfection and visual irregularity of the vintage panels gives the façade a unique appearance and above all individuality, since no slab is like any other. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and new knowledge and the commitment to simplicity and naturalness is reflected in this new surface. A focus on the essential and the random look of the vintage surface is what makes it so charming.
