New Zealand Industrial Designer Lucy Tupu is launching her debut collection of luxury rugs 'South Pacific' this May at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. The new line will complement the designer's existing furniture and lighting designs and extensive custom rug and carpet services.
‘South Pacific’ is a celebration of Lucy’s New Zealand heritage, organically inspired by the island’s native birds fused with her most influential period - the 1970’s. The collection balances gentle curves with a bright, bold palette that adds impact and sophistication to design schemes featuring dynamic colors or timeless neutrals. “Before now I had only designed rugs as abstract shapes, so to create in a more commercial line has been liberating” says Lucy on her first collection. “The same inspirations I draw on designing my furniture now flows through to flooring.”
The rugs set to be released at ICFF are: ● ‘Moa’ - fluid curves move into bold spaces of luxurious silk and New Zealand wool. ● ‘Tui’ - a homage to New Zealand’s native Tui bird, feathers are simplified to linear curves mixing silk and wool to reflect the bird’s stunning teal feathers. ● ‘Kererū’ - whether you see flowing streams or marbled patterns, the design is a talking point in any space. Touches of silk take the soft curves to another textural level. ● ‘Takahē’ - an extension of Tui, Takahē continues refining the concept of overlapping tones and shapes. A modern twist on color blocking.
