Cavalcanti returns to designjunction this September to present ‘Optical Illusion’. Their new collection of handwoven and tufted-rugs combines dynamic patterns with hints of colour to produce a series of designs with a playful optical emphasis.

Designers ChiChi Cavalcanti and Natasha Phillips have worked together on this collection to design a range that applies Cavalcanti’s ethos of producing high quality handmade rugs to an inquisitive exploration of spatial perception and tricks of the eye.

For designjunction 2016, Cavalcanti have collaborated with photographer Hendrik Schneider to develop a series of images of designer Natasha Phillips camouflaged in the optical patterns of the rugs that surround her. These patterns blur the borders between person and object, and gesture towards Cavalcanti’s firm belief that rug design should manifest an holistic approach that brings people into harmony with their surroundings.

The new monochromatic designs play with perceptions of depth and dimensionality, and allow the rugs to ‘expand’ or ‘cosy’ a space while redefining areas within its setting.

The two hand-tufted colour designs ‘CUTOUT Ochre’ and ‘CUTOUT Plum’ draw from designer ChiChi Cavalcanti’s collage and painting work, exploring composition, the colour spectrum and waves of light within the spatial context within an interior.

The Optical Illusion Collection marks the addition of new designs to Cavalcanti’s flatweaves range, all available in custom colours and sizes. For further information and prices please contact Giulia Shah on [email protected]

Cavalcanti has worked with high profile architects and interior designers to create unique rugs for contract and commercial clients such as The Office Group, Hill + Knowlton Strategies, Standard Bank, Marriot Hotels, Biogen IDEC, Vanguard, Arcadia, Joseph and Selfridges, as well as private residential clients.
