Linoleum is a durable floor covering with a long history and has always been made from natural raw materials. Forbo Flooring was one of the first companies who started making linoleum at the end of the
19th century. Despite the most modern production techniques, linoleum manufacturing continues to build on its craftsmanship and natural roots.
The main component of linoleum is linseed oil. Linseed oil is being made by pressing the seeds of the flax plant. The seeds contain approximately 40% oil. To produce linoleum linseed oil is mixed with wood flour, natural resin, limestone and pigment. The total mixture is then calendered on a jute backing.
Our linoleum is 97% organic based and 76%, by weight, bio-based. In addition we have been able to use 45% Post Industrial Recycled Content in our linoleum. Our goal is to return as much benefit to the earth as it has given us through its fields, farms, and forests. Because linoleum is made from natural raw materials linoleum is not a burden for the environment and can be considered as a genuine sustainable product.
