The modern KOTORI lamps are a new product of the renowned Hiyoshiya. Hiyoshiya is a family run business in its fifth generation and a manufacturer of Japanese traditional umbrella located in Kyoto, Japan. The beauty of sunlight shining through the washi paper of an unfolded umbrella inspired the KOTORI-collection. KOTORI lamps are handmade and produced with the same way as Japanese traditional umbrellas. Therefore they can be folded and unfolded like an umbrella. When the light is shining through the washi paper it makes a warm and enjoyable light to every place.
The company Hiyoshiya was founded more then 150 years ago in the late Edo period. Since then it is manufacturing Japanese traditional umbrellas. Hiyoshiya’s umbrellas are called “Kyo-wagasa”, like Kyoto, the cultural center of Japan. Hiyoshiya is the only manufacturer left who is producing the extra big, formal umbrellas used for the traditional outdoor Tea ceremonies by masters of Tea ceremony.
