Benches often have a seat and a backrest that make people sit on the same side, next to each other. The main point of Nichetto’s inspiration was to create an object that would establish a connection among those using it, a sort of small urban living room: this is where the idea of having not one but two backrests originated from. Thus people can sit and still face each other. The choice of aluminum honeycomb as a material for this project stemmed from the desire to create a lightweight object that could live in any environment. Earhart is composed of sheets of aluminum honeycomb – two for the backrest and the legs, the third for the seat that creates a linear and harmonious whole without superfluous elements. The slender shapes of this bench are reminiscent of the long wings of a plane. As a matter of fact, the name Earhart refers to the famous Amelia Earhart, who in the 30s would fly a red Lockheed Vega made of aluminium.
