Decode has been successfully working with a variety of different materials (blown glass, concrete, wire rod) for their lighting and wanted to add both a new material and a new collection to their range. So this formed their brief to us: a simple flexible lighting idea in wood. A while back when working with bone china, we tried to develop a honey dipper and became fascinated by the shape and its properties. And out of this experimentation grew our new lamp: the Dipper. By creating a structure, and varying the shape of each layer, we realised that we could generate a simple but effective light. Made from half a sheet of plywood we have designed a ceiling lamp that looks a bit like the end of a honey dipper: three laser cut spines hold together the ten layers of bevel edged plywood that create the shade. The layering creates a soft diffused horizontal light, as well as a down light. A low energy bulb is a white light and this is softened and rendered more natural in colour by its reflection off the wood, almost like an old school incandescent glow.
