Bendywood® is a solid hardwood that can be worked like normal wood and then bent to shape in ambient conditions. A variety of common European and North American woods are used, such as beech, ash, oak, maple, cherry and walnut.

The raw wood is processed thermo-mechanically. The blanks are steamed to soften the cell walls. While they are still damp, the blanks are compressed along the grain to about 80% of their length. The blanks are then dried in this compressed form. Due to the compression, the density is approximately 20% greater than that of the unprocessed wood.

Bendywood® is mainly used in the furniture industry and for interior decoration. It is applied to curved surfaces that would otherwise have to be manufactured using traditional bending or lamination technology. As a result of the process, the bending ratio is increased to 1/10. This compares to about 1/45 for untreated wood of the same type.

The wood is not weatherproof and as it is for indoor use only. There are numerous variations in

colour, dimension, finish and design available. Current applications include handrails, skirting, blanks and bars, but novel applications are also being developed, such as shoe soles.
